Training

Meet Kate
A trailblazer with 38 years of experience
Kate Sheehan is an internationally renowned Occupational Therapist. She graduated from the Derby School of Occupational Therapy in 1987.
Throughout her career, Kate has dedicated herself to accessible-housing design. She emphasises the importance of understanding what home truly means to each individual and how poorly planned modifications can impact clients’ well-being.

Kate has played an active role in the Royal College of Occupational Therapy Housing Specialist Section since its inception.
She has held several posts on the National Executive Committee, including that of Chair. Through this platform, Kate has strengthened connections with government, advocating for the role of occupational therapy in housing and the broader built environment.
She continues to collaborate with the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, contributing to the development of more accessible built environments.
In 2018, Kate co-authored the Wheelchair Housing Design Guide for the Centre for Accessible Environments, published in March 2018 with the support of the then Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
She has also authored Minor Adaptations without Delay and contributed chapters to The Essential Guide for Occupational Therapists.
Kate has presented her work in Australia, Italy, and the United States, and delivered the first accessible housing courses in Bosnia and Croatia.
Her contributions have been widely recognised. In 2022, she was awarded a Fellowship from the Royal College of Occupational Therapists for her exceptional work in the field. In 2023, she received a fellowship from the University of Worcester.
Kate maintains a small clinical caseload to stay attuned to her clients’ needs. She provides clinical mentoring to various local authorities and collaborates closely with consultancy firms to promote improved, inclusive design.
